Introduction:

The film opens in Nevada, 1957 to a convoy of U.S. Military vehicles being driven by agents of the Soviet Union lead by Colonel-Doctor Irina Spalko. The group is driving to a location in the desert called “Hanger 51″ where they force Indiana Jones to lead them to an object he had previously studied. The object, which is highly magnetized, is found by throwing gunpowder in the air and following its trail. When the crate is finally opened, it is revealed that it contains remains of a creature that is apparently not of this world.

As the Russians are distracted with their find, Jones attempts to escape, only to be foiled by his old partner, ‘Mac’ George McHale, who has betrayed him to the Soviets. Jones again manages to escape into the desert where he stumbles upon a nuclear test town and narrowly escapes the blast. He is brought to a facility where he is debriefed and discovers he is the target of investigation by the FBI for his unwilling dealings with the Soviets.

Jones returns to his university to find his job in jeopardy because of the FBI investigation and is offered a leave of absence by Dean Charles Stanforth. During his departure, he is stopped by a young man, Mutt Williams (Shia LaBeouf) and told that his old colleague, Harold Oxley, has discovered a mysterious crystal skull and it has gotten him into trouble. Mutt gives Jones a note from Oxley that leads them to believe they must go to Peru for the next part of their journey.

Once reaching Peru, Jones discovers that Oxley had apparently gone mad and was put in an asylum from which he was taken by men with guns. In his cell, Jones discovers clues to the location of Francisco de Orellana’s grave. Francisco was a Conquistador who was seeking Akator (also known as El Dorado) in the 1500’s but went missing along with his team. Upon finding the grave, he finds the body of the Conquistadors along with an inhumanly-shaped skull made of pure crystal with the same magnetic characteristics as the body from Hanger 51.
